Finally! A recording of my top song of the 1980s!
Estimated reading time: 3 minute(s) (493 words)

Here's a song I wrote in the 1980s, but never got around to actually recording until now. No, I didn't write it about a specific person. I had, by then, started to see that a lot of people seemed unable or unwilling to examine the reasons for their unhappiness. This song was my response.

Sally's Choice

By Paul S Cilwa

Sally wants to be pretty,
To be a movie queen.
She wants to be one of Charlie's Angels
Bouncing 'cross the screen.
She wants to wear those disco clothes
And stay out past ten;
She wants to be the "other woman"
To those other men.

But Sally loves to eat and eat;
Her mouth can't seem to stop.
She likes to eat potato chips
And drink that soda pop.
She eats and eats and eats and still
Has spaces left unfilled.
She eats to ease the pain of all
The dreams that she has killed.

And Sally thinks that she makes all
the choices in her life.
She's never seen the one choice
That made all of her strife:
She chose to follow other people's
Rules of how to be
And so she's just another slave
Who thinks that she is free.

Sally wants to be happy,
To live a life of joy.
She wants to dance among the stars,
The sun, to be her toy;
She wants her life to be a light
Of happiness, a glow
She wants her friends to turn to her
In their times of woe.

But Sally's soul is filled with guilt;
Her church has told her this.
And she must give her life to Christ
'Fore she can have His bliss.
But He has never come to her,
Her prayers are empty sighs;
And so, she waits for happiness
Until the day she dies.

And Sally thinks that she makes all
The choices in her life.
She's never seen the one choice
That made all of her strife:
She chose to follow other people's
Rules of how to be
And so she's just another slave
Who thinks that she is free.

Sally wants her lover
To also be her friend.
She wants him to be faithful
His love to never end.
She wants him to think like she does,
To follow every rule
But Sally's love is his own man
And she is just a fool.

And so one day she finds her love
In her best friend's embrace
She lets herself be told she's been
Insulted and disgraced.
The things she's never thought about
Tell her what must be done
And so, before they meet again,
She's bought herself a gun.

And Sally thinks that she makes all the
Choices in her life
She's never seen the one choice
That caused her pain and strife
When she refused to think,
She gave up her humanity
And so she's just another slave
Who thinks that she is free.
