A song about being a young dad in the '70s.

No Regrets

When the 1970s began, I was a young man with big plans and the whole world apparently open to me. By the time they ended, I was a husband and a father of four, working to keep a household fed, and the plans had changed. I wrote this song as a wink at that gap between the dreams and the diapers. Being a young dad was hard, but it was also some of the best of my life. The kids were there at the window waiting for me, and that mattered more than any of the plans. I changed a lot of things in those years, and as it turned out, the thing I changed most was me.

No Regrets

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I swore I'd change the world, and well,
I change it daily. Phew, the smell!
I'd rock and roll and drive a Vette,
Now it's rock-a-bye, you can bet.

[Refrain]
No regrets, no regrets,
Ask me twice, no regrets,
Oh, no, no, no regrets!

[Verse 2]
I try to make my two ends meet,
They only wave across the street.
Four hungry mouths, one weekly check,
I'm in the red up to my neck.

[Refrain]
No regrets, no regrets,
Ask me twice, no regrets,
Oh, no, no, no regrets!

[Verse 3]
She saved my plate, she kept my chair,
Four little faces, waiting there.
I swore I'd change the world, but who
Knew that the world would change me, too?

[Final Refrain]
No regrets, no regrets,
Ask me twice, no regrets,
Oh, no, no, no regrets!

[Spoken tag, after a one-beat rest]
Regrets? Well, maybe one: the Vette.
