My mom's opinion of a certain TV witch.
Estimated reading time: 2 minute(s) (473 words)

I'm not sure why the first episode of Bewitched I ever saw was at a neighbor's rather than at home. I know we were late purchasing a TV set, but surely we had one by 1966? In any case, I was hooked, and never intentionally missed an episode after that. I was 15 and had no idea why the idea of a world of fabulous folks with remarkable talents, hidden in plain sight amongst ordinary people who ignored their existence, should be compelling to me, but it was.

My mom also became a fan for a completely different reason. And, as a life-long poet of limited but existent reknown, she of course was compelled to put her admiration of the titular witch (and her housekeeping skills) into rhyme. And, as a life-long songwriter of non-existent reknown, I was compelled to set it to music…the performance of which I am crediting to The Reruns, from whom I'm sure we'll hear more in time.

Wiggle Your Nose

By Paul S Cilwa & Edna Mae Cilwa · Performed by The Reruns

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Across the starry moonlit sky
She used to ride a broom.
But now when she goes streaking by
We hear a sonic boom!

[Verse 2]
She's headed where the Action is
Not just on Hallowe'en;
But weekly, now, she's in Show Biz
Upon our TV screen.

[Chorus]
Oh, wouldn't it be wonderful
To live a life like that?
Just wiggle your nose and—presto!—
You've got yourself a hat!
No scrubbing and no dusting,
No dishes in the sink;
A little bit of magic
Can do more than you think!

[Verse 3]
She isn't scary, I will say;
A real suburban wife.
And no one at the PTA
Suspects her secret life.

[Verse 4]
Housework's not a chore at all;
Her cleaning is a snap.
She zaps the dishes, windows, walls,
And still has time to nap.

[Chorus]
Oh, wouldn't it be wonderful
To live a life like that?
Just wiggle your nose and—presto!—
You've got yourself a hat!
No scrubbing and no dusting,
No dishes in the sink;
A little bit of magic
Can do more than you think!

[Verse 5]
So when I tune to watch that witch
Go streaking through the sky,
Don't blame me if my nose I twitch
And wonder, "Why can't I?"

[Chorus / Ending]
Oh, wouldn't it be wonderful
To live a life like that?
Just wiggle your nose and—presto!—
And that's the end of that!
No scrubbing and no dusting,
No dishes in the sink;
A little bit of magic
Can do more than you think!

[Tag]
So if you see me twitch my nose,
Don't ask me why I try—
I'm just waiting for my broomstick
To go streaking through the sky!
