Dionne Peacenik

When I was growing up, Dionne Warwick, known for "Walk On By," "I Say a Little Prayer" and "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," and for singing all of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's early songs about love and heartache, was one of my absolute favorite performers, and a sweetheart of a human being. So I couldn't resist writing a song that she might have sung in the 1960s, performed by another of my alter-egos, the imaginary singer and actress, Dionne Peacenik.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The morning feels so quiet,
Like the sky forgot to smile;
And every little teardrop
Has been falling for a while.
I watch them on the window,
Tracing silver down the pane—
And I whisper to the heavens,
"Won't you shine for me again?"

[Verse 2]
The world is tired of shadows,
And the gray that never ends;
I'm longing for the sunlight
Like a letter needs to send.
If kindness had a color,
It would glow across the top—
So I'm sending up a prayer now:
"Make the raindrops stop."

[Chorus]
Make the raindrops stop,
Let the blue sky drop
A little hope on every heart that's aching.
Let the clouds unwind,
Give the world a sign
That all the love we dream about is waking.
Make the raindrops stop—
Let the sunlight gently fill the world again.

[Verse 3]
I know that storms are lessons,
And they teach us how to bend;
But even gentle hearts can
Need a brighter place to mend.
So lift us with your mercy,
Let the weary sorrow fall—
And bring a touch of golden peace
To warm the lives of all.

[Chorus]
Make the raindrops stop,
Let the blue sky drop
A little hope on every heart that's aching.
Let the clouds unwind,
Give the world a sign
That all the love we dream about is waking.
Make the raindrops stop—
Let the sunlight gently fill the world again.

[Bridge]
Someday we'll look back smiling,
Knowing storms don't last forever;
And every tear that touched the earth
Helped grow something better.

[Final Chorus]
Make the raindrops stop,
Let the blue sky drop
A little hope on every heart that's aching.
Let the clouds unwind,
Give the world a sign
That all the love we dream about is waking.
Make the raindrops stop—
Let the sunlight gently fill the world again.
