The material of the first movement returns, having apparently learned nothing, and the work ends in the key it began in—a conclusion Cilwa has defended as "the least I could do."

It is worth saying that the least he could do is, here, the right thing to do. A concerto that has spent half an hour losing altitude has earned the ground it finally reaches, and the home key is the ground. The Second Concerto, written afterwards, declines the same courtesy, and says so.
