A song for a friend dying of an illness nobody had a name for yet.
Estimated reading time: 2 minute(s) (347 words)

I wrote this song when I was 27, for a friend who was dying of what I now believe was AIDS. Nobody had a name for it yet; doctors have since traced unrecognized AIDS deaths in the United States back to the late 1960s. All I knew was that my friend kept falling ill with one mysterious illness after another, with good stretches in between, and no one knew why. I wrote this mostly as my own attempt to understand what he was going through, and never published it or sang it publicly. The irony of releasing a song about mortality that I wrote at 27 is not lost on me. Now I'm 75, and the song has taken on a whole new meaning for me, because my own end is in sight.

Lyrics

Don't let the future sadden you
Dread not what lies ahead
It's not until the morning comes
We have to make our bed.

The past is nice to think about,
The future, nice to know;
The present's here - enjoy it now!
For soon I'll have to go.

There is nothing changeless here.
Should not things be that way?
Don't wrestle changes; you can't fight
The night that follows day.

There'll be a time, it has to come,
When I'll be gone from you.
You may find things are not so bright;
I know - I'll feel it, too.

But life goes on; the world still turns.
You turn with it, and then
You may find that, although you know
You won't see me again,

The time we had was time well spent
Because we didn't mourn;
Because we dared to smell the rose
And not befear the thorn.

Don't let the future sadden you,
Dread not the coming day,
But lie with me - make memories
That cannot pass away.

And when the present's finally passed
And future time is near,
Love others, just because we loved,
Because I once was here.
