Paul, Paul & Mary

One day when I was lifeguarding at an otherwise deserted beach (no crowds in the early morning!), I noticed flapping pages in the sand by the dunes and went to see what it was. It turned out to be a book of sheet music, a paperback volume of Peter, Paul & Mary songs. Now, somehow, I had never heard of PP&M. Of course I knew their songs, I just hadn't known who sang them. Anyone who lived through that era knew and probably loved their gentle tunes like "Puff, the Magic Dragon," "If I Had a Hammer" and "Blowin' in the Wind," and other folk songs about peace, justice and children's fantasies. Ironically, they have since maintained that none of their songs were about drugs. (Sure, Jan!) But since in the way we remember them they were, here's one the way we remember them, by "Paul, Paul & Mary".

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I love my Mary Jane,
My tea from way back when;
We'd sit beside the ocean breeze
And light that left-hand cig again.
With grass and gage and muggles,
And a little brown bag of hay,
We'd watch the clouds turn purple
As the funny stuff drifted our cares away.

[Verse 2]
Oh, Panama Red was friendly,
And Acapulco Gold was kind;
The jazzman's friend called sweet Lucy
Could ease a worried mind.
We passed the rope and herb around,
That magic dragon's smoke so fine;
And every puff of loco-weed
Made the whole wide world align.

[Chorus]
Oh, I love my Mary Jane,
My happy hay, my good smoke flame;
From boo to bush, from pot to tea,
She keeps my heart in harmony.
Yes, I love my Mary Jane,
My mellow friend through sun and rain;
With every curl of drifting jive,
She makes my weary soul revive.

[Verse 3]
We wandered through the moonlight
With our herb tucked safe away;
A little stick of jive to share
At the end of every day.
The funny cigarettes we rolled
Were a passport to the sky;
And Mary Jane would lift us up
Till the stars began to sigh.

[Chorus]
Oh, I love my Mary Jane,
My happy hay, my good smoke flame;
From boo to bush, from pot to tea,
She keeps my heart in harmony.
Yes, I love my Mary Jane,
My mellow friend through sun and rain;
With every curl of drifting jive,
She makes my weary soul revive.

[Bridge]
Now seasons change and years roll on,
But still I hear her gentle song;
A whisper from that magic leaf
That everything will turn out strong.
For Mary Jane is timeless,
And her comfort never ends—
She's every name the heavens gave
To the smoke we shared with friends.

[Final Chorus]
Oh, I love my Mary Jane,
My happy hay, my good smoke flame;
From boo to bush, from pot to tea,
She keeps my heart in harmony.
Yes, I love my Mary Jane,
My mellow friend through sun and rain;
With every curl of drifting jive,
She makes my weary soul revive.
