The Dave Clark Five O'Clock Shadow

A girl I dated after high school loved the Dave Clark Five. I mean she loved the Dave Clark Five, especially the one called "Mike". I mean, that was in 1969 and I still remember that detail; that's how much she talked about them. The Dave Clark Five were known for "Glad All Over," "Bits and Pieces" and "Catch Us If You Can," and for stomping songs about love and dancing. "Knock On My Door" would have been a typical title for them; but I decided to make this song about another thing I remember from the Sixties: The dreaded door-to-door evangelists with their pamphlets and "Good News". So, since the DC5 songs were usually about trying to convince someone to dance—one may say, trying to convert someone to the dancing lifestyle…

Of course, this wasn't performed by them. But it could have been! This version is by "The Dave Clark Five O'Clock Shadow".

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Two by two in their Sunday best,
Marching up my street, putting my block to the test.
Tie pressed sharp and shoes shined bright,
I've been peeking through the curtains since the morning light.

[Pre-Chorus]
I turned off Shindig, so don't walk on by,
Wipe your feet and give the Frug a try!

[Chorus]
Knock on my door! (Knock! Knock!)
Knock on my door! (Knock! Knock!)
Bring your good news, I've got some too,
There's a brand-new dance, and it's made for you!
Knock on my door!

[Verse 2]
Leave your pamphlet, take my platter,
Trade your tract for a track, now that's what matters!
You came to save my soul? Well, I've got soul to spare,
Mr. Motown's on the hi-fi, so pull up a chair!

[Pre-Chorus]
I turned off Shindig, so don't walk on by,
Wipe your feet and give the Pony a try!

[Chorus]
Knock on my door! (Knock! Knock!)
Knock on my door! (Knock! Knock!)
Bring your good news, I've got some too,
There's a brand-new dance, and it's made for you!
Knock on my door!

[Bridge (sax break, then spoken)]
(Knock, knock!) Who's there?
(Good news!) Good news who?
Good news, you're invited to the Hully Gully-lujah! (Whoo!)
Your doorstep's my dance step, come on through!

[Verse 3]
Preaching to the choir? Well, my choir's got a beat,
There's a Frug in the hallway, Watusi down the street!
Say you're a believer? Well, so am I, my friend,
I believe in the Mashed Potato, right down to the end!

[Final Chorus]
Knock on my door! (Knock! Knock!)
Don't leave me hanging on the doorknob, man!
Bring your good news, I've got some too,
There's a brand-new dance, and it's made for you!
Knock on my door!

[Outro (stomping drums, fade)]
Knock! Knock! Knock on my door...
(Knock! Knock!) Knock on my door...
