Glen Campbell is known for "Gentle on My Mind," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Wichita Lineman," and other songs about lonely working men and the long roads they travel. This song wasn't written or performed by him. I've always been a fan; his was one of the first albums I ever bought with my own money, and I sang his arrangement of Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay at a school talent show, utterly unaware of Otis Redding's version. Besides, Campbell was really cute and was one of my first media crushes (after Wally Cleaver). But if he had written a song for me personally, this could have been it! This version is by "Glen Camper".

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
These pipes've been complainin'
Since the cold front rolled on through;
And every busted meter
Makes me think of him, it's true.
I'm drivin' down the county roads,
Where the frost can split a seam—
Just a Topeka plumber
Keepin' water in the stream.

[Verse 2]
The radio gets fuzzy
Past the wheat fields and the tracks;
But his voice stays clearer
Than the signal comin' back.
The copper starts a-singin'
When the pressure's climbin' high—
And I swear I hear him callin'
Like a whisper from the sky.

[Chorus]
And I'm a Topeka plumber,
And I still miss his touch;
Through every frozen meter
I remember us so much.
And I need him when the daylight
Starts slippin' off the rim—
Yes, I'm a Topeka plumber,
And I still reach out for him.

[Verse 3]
The town gets kinda lonely
When the snow begins to fall;
I tighten every fitting
Just to keep from missin' all
The warmth he used to give me,
Like a porch light in the night—
And I wonder if he's waitin'
Where the window's glowin' bright.

[Chorus]
And I'm a Topeka plumber,
And I still miss his touch;
Through every frozen meter
I remember us so much.
And I need him when the daylight
Starts slippin' off the rim—
Yes, I'm a Topeka plumber,
And I still reach out for him.

[Bridge]
Maybe spring'll thaw the distance
And the things we left behind;
Till then I'll keep the water runnin'
With him still on my mind.

[Final Chorus]
And I'm a Topeka plumber,
And I still miss his touch;
Through every frozen meter
I remember us so much.
And I need him when the daylight
Starts slippin' off the rim—
Yes, I'm a Topeka plumber,
And I still reach out for him.
